Is it ok to use a powder coated plain steel woven wire mesh for an exterior application?
No, woven wire mesh is an Over/Under construction where wires are overlapping each other at the intersections of a grid. Powder coating is a topical application and will only cover the surfaces it is able to reach. Therefore, the base alloy is what matters and is what will make the mesh right for an exterior or wet environment. Consider powder coating over corrosion resistant alloys like aluminum, Stainless steel or pre-galvized wire mesh to achieve the weatherproofing you require.
How do plated finishes get applied on wire mesh?
Plated finishing is a chemical process that involves coating a substrate metal with a thin layer of another metal. In cases where it is an “antique” finish, a darker finish is applied and then removed by a human with an abrasive pad to get the desired effect.
It is good to note variations can occur in metal and with secondary finish operations. Pieces may vary slightly in tones and character from samples or previous orders and no guarantee can be made of a previous exact match.
