Banker Wire Mesh Outfits State-of-the-Art Indoor Soccer Stadium in Montréal

Woven Metal Mesh Effectively Divides Space While Satisfying Minimalist Design

November 15, 2016

MUKWONAGO, WI—NOVEMBER 15, 2016— Built in the center of one of Montréal’s most diverse neighborhoods, the Stade de Soccer de Montréal is a new visual and cultural symbol in the city. Utilizing custom-fabricated Banker Wire mesh partitions around its indoor playing field, the stadium provides tens of thousands of soccer players with a first-class practicing and playing environment.

The design of the Stade de Soccer de Montréal pays homage to and blends in with its surrounding landscape – a former quarry now being turned into what will be the largest urban park in Montréal. Outside, the stadium shows its versatility as a structure built around the topography, not despite it.

Inside, this versatility is furthered not only by its multiple configurations, but by its minimal, naturally-lit look and feel. When charged with finding equally versatile interior design components that would meet both these technical and aesthetic requirements, architects Saucier + Perrotte chose Banker Wire woven wire mesh.

In terms of technical requirements, Banker’s woven wire mesh effectively separates the playing field turf from the locker room corridor, and does so while remaining immune to wear and tear in the high-traffic area.

“We were looking for a continuous element to clearly and elegantly define the space between the locker rooms and the soccer field – an element that also would not break down or become compromised,” says Trevor Davies, Project Architect for Saucer + Perrotte. “Banker Wire provides us with that element.”

Saucier + Perrotte specified Banker Wire’s M12Z-17 mesh pattern. M12Z-17 is a simple and elegant twin-wire rigid cable weave. Well-balanced and strong, it is ideal for railing infill panels and facades, along with many other interior design elements. Robust on the loom, this mesh can be woven in all wire alloys as well as mixed alloy configurations. It has impressive visual character and is very easy to work with.

“Visually, we liked Banker Wire’s metal mesh because it provided a minimalist aesthetic without detracting from the look of the wood beams above,” adds Davies. “The material also blends very well into the guard rail below, and its semi-transparent qualities allow natural daylight into the heavily-used corridor that leads into the locker rooms.”

Banker’s Canadian Representative, Rieger Architectural Products, provided the installer with product information and support throughout the project. This eliminated any unnecessary challenges for the architect and allowed a simple transition from design to reality.

“Saucier + Perrotte was looking for a sturdy and functional mesh that was also attractive,” says Ryan Rieger, President of Rieger Architectural Products. “The mesh needed to be as unobtrusive as possible visually, yet have the strength to maintain its integrity between the play area and spectators. Banker Wire helped us find the right balance.”

The end result is a one-of-a-kind sports facility, with a design and usability that will be enjoyed by the community and visitors for years to come.

The Stade de Soccer de Montréal was completed in April 2015. The project team included owner the City of Montréal; architect Saucier + Perrotte Architectes, Montréal, QC, Canada; Banker Wire Canadian Representative Rieger Architectural Products, Winnipeg, MB, Canada; and fabricator Mometal Structures Inc., Varennes, QC, Canada.

About Architectural Woven Wire Mesh
Pre-crimped woven wire mesh is constructed of individual wires that are crimped prior to being woven together on a loom. Pre-crimping the wires provides a much higher degree of control during the weaving process. This allows for far more intricate and interesting patterns, as well as unique customization, to meet the vision of the designer. Banker Wire has refined and innovated its crimping process more than any other manufacturer, delivering more than 8,000 different spacing, diameter, and crimp combinations, plus endless customization options. As a result, Banker can make any woven wire mesh pattern imaginable – manufactured to specify for any project type.
