The design of AVA NoMa—a 13-story, urban infill high rise residential building—nods to Washington, D.C. NoMa neighborhood’s industrial past while embodying a ‘refined industrial’ aesthetic that is inherently modern. To help realize this design vision, KTGY Architecture + Planning specified Banker Wire’s L-62 and LZ-11 woven wire mesh— patterns that have roots in the industrial world, yet lend themselves well to architectural applications as a result of Banker Wire’s precise, high-definition lock crimp manufacturing capabilities.
Specified at AVA NoMa, Banker Wire’s L-62 and LZ-11 woven wire mesh were utilized throughout 20,600 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenity spaces, including in the fabrication of residential balconies, and as fencing and partitioning in many public areas, such as the WAG Pet Park and the landscaped residential courtyard. Combined with the other external building materials, such as exposed concrete, brick veneer, and metal finishes, the patterns pay visual homage to the new residential area’s industrial history. The wire mesh endures exterior wear-and-tear while allowing visual continuity of the design intent throughout each area.
Banker Wire’s unique lock crimp tool design is the basis for L-62 and LZ-11. The distinct, pre-crimp process Banker uses during manufacturing creates precise patterns featuring straight sections of wire with highly defined crimps at the points of intersection, lending itself to a smooth appearance to complement the functional purpose of many of AVA NoMA’s public areas. The unique tooling allows for extremely scalable patterns in both square and rectangular orientations to suit architectural applications that require both form and function.
